BUTTER AND CHEESE

WHO CONTROLS HAHKETJ “THE THREE MERCHANTS Oft TOOLEY STREET,’! _ = STATEMENT QUESTIONED. The Prime Minister made a statement recentlv in the House that nhile he was in London he was informed that the market for dairy produce waa controlled by a committee of three Tooley street merchants, who met every morning and fixed the prices for butter and cheese for the day or until farther notice, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr T. M. Wilford) in the House of Representatives yesterdav afternoon. But lie (continued Mr Wilford) had received information in writing from the managing director of the AngloCantinental Produce Company, who happened to be in New Zealand, to the effect that he had had twenty-four years in Tooley street, and that no such committee evicted, or ewer had existed; and that the only committee that ever did exist was an advisory board of six to eight me triers of the trade, and there was no committee at all for controlling or regulating the butter and cheese market. Where, he asked, did the Prime Minister’s information come from? Mr Massey: I don’t know that I am bound to tell the public where my information came from. (Laughter.) I may say, however, that my information came from a gentleman who had been connected with the trade for the last twenty-five years, and is as wellknown in Wellington as I am. A Reform member: Your information is quite correct.
