C. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Carbine.”) A final reminder is given that Maxton nominations dose this evening. New Zealand Cup nominations close this evening. Ngata ia to be turned out for a good spell. The Maniapoto gelding has had a lot of racing in recent months, and has won a lot of stake money, his victories including a Wanganui Cup. Miss Gold was unable to start at the C.J.C. meeting owing to soreness. Petunia is in work again, and probably will be raced at Marton and Wanganui. He is being trained on the beach at Otaki. There are some good-looking youngsters in the south this year, and several promising sorts were given a run down the Riccarton straight during the recent meeting there. Kashmir, who was reported some time ago to have been bought by a New Zealand sportsman, is the favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap. Others well fancied are the New Zealanders Cup’don and Kick Off. While the totalizator receipts at the gallops in Christchurch are falling those at the trots are rising. One racing enthusiast expresses the opinion that trotting is growing in popularity because its control is more democratic. Horatius, who scored a surprise victory in the Redcliffs Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Probable from an Amasis mare. He is a great galloper on the track, but has not always acted up to bis private reputation. According to a Sydney writer, The Dunce and Uncle Alex have been bought by the Sydney owner, Mr T. C. Trautwein, and are due to arrive in Australia shortly.
