THE CITY SEATS
"REST AN’ BE THANKFUV* CHOICE OF LOCALITIES. A correspondent writes: —"Many a weary citizen of Wellington, and also many a footsore visitor to the capital city, has found the seats provided by the generosity of the late Mr John Keyton In different localities throughout the metropolis of inestimable benefit. After a strenuous two or three hours’ shopping, or of perambulating the principal streets on a sight-seeing expedition, it ia a great relief to one's weary bones to drop into one of these seats for a short relaxation. “The City Council, in its desire to earn'out the terms of the bequest, has thoughtfully distributed the seats in various parte of the city where it was thought the toon would be most appreciated, but it is open to question whether proper discrimination has been exercised in the choice of localities. "In one place a number of seats has been placed directly over the road from a hotel, and these are generally occupied by bibulous individuals who wander ovet from the hostelry in question for a spell between drinks. In another locality two of the gift seats are planted in front of one of the city’s public sanitary conveniences, and these attract patrons of a nondescript character who could with advantage be relegated to some institution where they would be looked aftet and not offend the public eye. "It is out of the question that these seats will be used by anv other than the class that now frequents them. There may bo others equally badly placed, but the6e two examples should ehow that a redistribution of the seats would not be amiss, so that worthv people would indeed have occasion to ‘rest aa’ be thankfu*."
