SUBURBAN TRAINS
WELL] NGTON-OTAKI SERVICE. ’ THE MINISTER’S REPLY. In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, Mr W. H. Field, M.P. for Otaki, put in a plea for an earlier morning train from Otaki and Paekakariki to Wellington and for the extension of the suburban service generally to Otaki and Paekakariki. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister for Railways) replied that the question of extending the suburban ser. vice had been under consideration, a long time; but at the present time expenditure on extensions that would not pay could not be recommended. The Railway Deportment was at present losing some £3OOO a day; ana until the position improved, considerably, the department could not extend services that did not pay. With regard to the extension of the service from Otaki to Wellington, that had been under consideration for the past twelve months, but all the information before the department was to the effect that the extension of the service from Paekakariki to Otaki would not pay for axle-grease. The question of the early morning train from Otaki to Wellington was now under consideration.
