ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY
STRONG POLICE FORCE IN CHASE. Information has been received to the effect that a Maori named Joe Rawiri, Who was arrested at Raetihi for breaking and entering, escaped from custody during the week-end, and a strong police force went out in search of him. The prisoner was armed with a .303 Lee-Enfield rifle, and the police officers are also armed. Rawiri, however, dropped his rifle, and Was seen making towards the landing on the Wanganui river, neat Raetihi. Several police offioera also left Raurimu in the hope of heading the Maori off.
