BOXING

HUTT VALLEY TOURNEY SOME INTERESTING BOUTS. The second tournament of the Hutt valley Boxing Association was commenced last evening in the Empire Theatre, Petone, when there was a large attendance of 'both suburban and city patrons. All the bouts were of a high order and the boxing was characterised by clean, hard, hitting. The tournament will be continued this evening. Th© officials were:—Referee. Mr Earl Stewart; judges, Messrs E. Price and W. S. Brice; announcer, Mr F. Dolling; stage manager, Mr J. W. Longman; Messrs T. Blyth and H. C. Jay ; official seconds, Messrs P. Bdney and B. Childs; clerk of scales, Mr M. Pickering. PAPERWEIGHT. HURDLE v. BROWN. In the paperweight division, D. Hurdle (sst 4lb) defeated R. Brown (sst 111 b) after a very close contest. The lighter boy did most of the leading and was always aggressive. Brown seemed content to remain on the defensive, but he used both hands well. Hurdle wa» awarded a popular decision. COTTRELL v. HURDLE. J. Cottrell (ost 1311 b) outpointed M. Hurdle (Gst). Both boys are good, twohanded fighters and there was not much between them. Cottrell, however, had the advantage in reach and was nearly always the aggressor The decision met with a mixed reception. bantamweight ARTHUR v. SANDERS. F. Sanders (7&t 12ib) outpointed C. Arthur (Sst 21b) in a bantam weight contest. Arthur was always _ the aggressor, and often connected with heavy right swings, but Sanders was undoubtedly the better 'boxer. He made his opponent miss a great deal and used to advantage a good, straight left. CREfREAR v. VINE, F. Vine (Bst 21b) defeated B. Crerear ffist 61 b) in a bantam, weight contest. Vine did most of the leading, and connected with heavy swings. Crerear notched ooints in the close work, and was perhaps the bettor boxer, but Vine’s aggressiveness earned for him the decision. FEATHERWEIGHT. GREEN v. HOBBS. G. Green (Bst 1341 b) and J. Hobbs (Bst 1.341b\ boxed three fast rounds. ,In the opening session Green was aggressive, and connected freely with right and left, but Hobbs saw out the second round, in slightly better shape. In the third round Hobbs boxed more warily, and used to advantage a straight left, followed by a right cros9. The decision in his favour was well received. GODDARD v. UPTON. The bout between K. Goddard (Sst 121 b) and R. Upton was a very mild affair. Both boys were content to stand off and box, and very rarely did either lad connect cleanly. Goddard was awardted the decision. LIGHTWEIGHT. HOBSON v. POWER. In a lightweight contest, H. Hobson (3st 101 b) outpointed M. Power (9st 10£lb). In the opening round Power .rushed in, swinging wildly, but Hobson steadied him with, heavy left hooks. In the second and third sessions Hobson connected freely with right and left, and was well ahead on points when the gong sounded. BURNS v. LOVE. J. Burns (9st 61b) defeated D. Love Ost 31b) after three willing rounds. Burns was’ the better boxer, and timed his blows better than did his opponent, Love was willing to mix matters, but ha swung very wildly. The decision in Bqrns’s favour was the correct one. BROWN v. ROBSON. A. Brown Ost lllb) defeated W. Rob son (lOst). In the opening round both boys boxed warily, and honours were about even. In the secondhand third sessions, however, Brown woke up, and con. nected freely with right and left swings Robson, fought back well, but was clearly outpointed. PETRIE v. CORNER, Petrie (9st 101 b) defeated E. Corner (9at Sib). In the first round Corner connect, ed with a heavy right swing, which made his opponent groggy, but Petrie boxed on gamely. In the second and third rounds Petrie used his superior ‘ reach to advantage and steadied his opponent with straight lefts and right crosses. It was a very close con. test, but the better man won. SLATER v. ROBINSON. Between C. Slater (.Sst 211 b) and J. Robinson (10st) there were three torrid rounds Slater was aggressive from the outset and during the first two rounds hit his opponeut from every nossiblo angle. In the third round both boys were tired and missed badly, but Slater received the only possible decision. < - WELTERWEIGHT. COMMETTfT MORAN. J. Moran (lOst 4lb) technically knock, ed out F. Cominetti (9st 131 b) in the third round. The winner used continually a well-timed straight left and soon had Commetti in a parlous plight. In. the third session the loser wont down to a heavy battery of blows, and the -towel came in from his corner. MIDDLEWEIGHT. DAVIS ““LESLIE. In a middleweight contest F; Davis (Ifist lllb) defeated W. Leslie (list 31b). Leslie was tne aggressor from the out. set and used both hands well. Davis did not attempt to lend, and he was very lucky to win. The judges disagreed and th© referee decided in favour of Davis. EXHIBITION SPAR. DEMSKy”aND LEWIS. Two Australians. Paul Demsky, a lightweight, and Alf. Lewis, featherweight, boxed a much appreciated ex. hibition spar Both displayed clever foot and head work, and demonstrated that they are at the top of their re. spective classes.
