Oolman, a bookmaker, has issued a -writ against a Melbourne doctor for tho recovery oi £993, being the amount paid in the settlement of a wager last year. The amount was paid by cheque, and Cohnan baaow tbe claim on the ground that the claim follows closely upon the decision of the executors of the estate of Richard Gar* land.
A recent message stated: —A* none of the bookmakers against whom claims were made for tbe return of cheque bets have refunded the amounts, writs hare been issued for the recovery of the claims made on behalf of the estate of the late Richard Garland in relation to the Victorian racing Club’s 6pring meeting in 1918. Tbe accounts vary from £l5O to £BSO, and tbe total amount involved is nearly £6OOO. If tbe case goes to the court it will be fought collectively. To this end bookmakers are establishing a defence fund.
