LICENSING BOOKMAKERS
PETITIONS TO PARLIAMENT. Six petitions, all numerously signed, concerning the restoration of bookmakers, were presented to Parliament yesterday. The petitioners say that the laws relating to gaming are unsatisfactory. The petitioners desired to impress on the House the fact that the provisions of the Gaming Amendment Act, 1920, had not behind them the support of the bulk of public opinion. They believed it would be more satisfactory, in the interests of public morality, for the State to license bookmakers to carry on their business on racecourses only under proper control of the New Zealand Racing Conference and the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and with -due provision for the protection of the public revenue. The petitioners asked that the petition be referred to a Select Committee to take evidence thereon, and that the House would pass tho necessary legislation for the licensing of bookmakers under proper safeguards.
