An interesting souvenir, to which he attaches much value, is carried by Mr C J do Garia, the well-known Aus tralian fruit settlement expert, who continued his voyage to Vancouver, from Auckland, by the Niagara. It was given him by the Prince of Wales during his visit to Australia in recognition of a service paid him by Mr de Garis, and consists of a silver cigarette ca9o with the Prince’s crest and feathers engraved upon it. The Prince was desirous of obtaining his last mail before departing from the Commonwealth. If it did not reach him before the departure of the Renown he would not have received it for four months Ho appealed to the Postal Department for assistance, but. was informed thatit was impossible to make the connection in time. Mr de Garis. who is also a capable aviator, heard of iho matter and arranged a service bv aeroplane This just made the connection in time, although the machine, in which he travelled smashed. With liis two companions he escaped without the slightest -injury. The Prince was delighted at receiving his mail, and wrote expressing his appreciation and forwarded the cigarette ,-ase. Mr de Garis flew from Brisbane to Sydney in one day, and still holds the record Australian flight, of two days from Melbourne to Perth.
