“CRIES CAN BE HEARD”
ENORMOUS SEA RUNNING. ATTEMPT TO SWIM ASHORE FAILS. The Secretary of the Post Office received the following further message: “It has been considered useless for a seaplane to attempt assistance. The Moeraki left at 1 p.m. for the scene ■with rockeU apparatus for assistance. Cries can he heard by the watchers on the high cliffs above the vessel. Eyewitnesses say the scene is fearfully heartrending. One man attempted tc swim ashore with a line hut an enormous sea waa running, and th/f attempt was abandoned. Postmaster at Coromandel reports tug arrived, but not thought possible to save lives. A mesagse sent at 3.40 p.m. states: . “Wiltshire is a total wreck. The crew are still on the forepart. Sea very rough. It was hoped to get a rocket apparatus overland by to-mor-row morning. Kaitoa’s party is now on shore opposite the wreck.”
