ALLEGED ARSON
AN ARREST ON FERRY BOAT. THE ACCUSED REMANDED. When the ferry boat arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, Detective-Ser-geant Andrews arrested a man named John Walkingtcm Smyth on a charge of wilfully setting fire to a building at Kaikoura on May sth, 1922. Brought before Mr F. K. Hunt, SjM., m the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the accused faced the charge of arson. Ohief-Detectivo Kemp asked that the man be remanded to appear at Christchurch this morning. The police inquiries were by no means complete, and he asked that tho man be remanded in custody. For the accused, Mr T. Cleary asked for bail, and suggested that perhaps two substantial securities could be arranged. “I won’t grant bail,” said the Magistrate, in granting the remand. ,“T£e chief-deteotive is making an {application, and must he taken to know more about the case than you or I.”
