RETRENCHMENT POLICY
“IS IT, REAL EGONOMY?”
VIEWS’ OF NEW ZEALAND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
CHILDREN HANDICAPPED
The executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute has forwarded a circular to its varioul branches in defence and support of educational progress. The institute considers, despite tho need for economy in public services. tho school children should not suffer. The circular states: “The New Zealand Educational Institute considers it desirable to suggest to all organisations having to do with the welfare of young people that they should take the conditions and prospects of education into consideration; and, if they are so disposed, to make the result of their consideration known both to the public and to the Government and Parliament. v “Though there may he need for economy in the affairs of the Dominion, it is more than doubtful whether even temporary restriction in education is real economy; and, so far as the young people in the schools are concerned, it is an injustice. “The building of schools has practically ceased; there is reason to . fear that the projected extension of the school age will not be made, at least in the near future.
“As a result, many children how in tho schools are not receiving the treatment they are entitled to; and many will leave school at the end of the year and succeeding years with insufficient preparation for thefr future life.”
