ANZAC DAY

TUESDAY’S OBSERVANCE

IMPRESSIVE CEREMONIES BEING ARRANGED. CHILDREN’S SERVICE. On Tuesday, Anzac Day will he observed with a solemnity fitted to the occasion. Wellington is still without a permament cenotaph, but a temporary structure will he erected opposite the Government Buildings. . CHILDREN’S SERVICE. A childien's service around the cenotaph is being arranged by the Women’s ■National Reserve Girls’ Club, working in conjunction with the Returned Soldiers’ Association andi the Education Board. The latter will provide for the marshalling of the children. The service will be conducted by the Rev. D. j. Shaw, and the order is as follows: — Hvnra, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” ; prayer, Rev . T. Feilden-Tay-lor; address, Staff-Captain Bladin; placing of tributes by representatives of schools and colleges; “Dead March,” Artillery Band; “Last Post,” Bugler Aldrich; National Anthem.' The service will commence at 11 a.m., and the children’s tributes will be taken to Karori military memorial oemetery by motor-lorry. WHO WHiL HELP? As there is likely to be a limited tram service, the W.N.R. Girls’ Club would be glad of the offer of cars to take out some of their representatives, who will arraange the wreaths on the graves at the cemetery. This work is always done, and well and tastefully done by the club members, so it is hoped that the offers will not he lacking. The club is also making arrangements for the printing of the Order of Service, in order to make the service more united. Private subscriptions have been offered to defray the cost. THE CRIPPLED CHILDREN. A suggestion has been made which should appeal to many people. Twelve of ‘ the crippled children at Trentham would like to attend the service in town, and the W.N.R. Girls’ dub has been asked if any arrangements could be made to provide motor transport for them. Offers of cars will he gladly received by the matron, School for Crippled Children, Trentham, or a telephone ring to 1712 would suffice. MEMORIAL SERVICE. In the afternoon there will he a memorial service at the Town Hall, at which the Royal Choral Society, the Fhilharmonio Society, and the Commercial Travellers* choir twill combine in, rendering Elgar’s “To the Fallen.” A sacred concert will be held in the evening. A poppy wreath, in memory of tho brave dead, is to he laid on the Cenotaph, Lambton quay, by a representative of the Government on Anzac Day. It has not yet been decided which Minister will perform this function. CEREMONY AT PETONE. WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED. The Petone war memorial will be unveiled on Anzac Day at 2.30 p.m., sjnd speaker's at the oeremony will.include Mr-TriM.'‘Wolford, M.P., General Richardson, Mr J. W. McEwan, Mayor of Petone and Mr W. T. Strand, Mayor of Lower Hutt. Returned soldiers are specially and cordially invited, add relatives and friends of fallen soldiers axe invited to bring floral tribute® during the morning to be placed on tbs statue. In the evening a united memorial service will be held in the Grand Theatre. MEETING AT OTAKI. UNITED SERVICE TO BE HELD. A meeting of the members of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday for the purpose of considering what action should be taken regarding Anzac ,\ Day (writes the “Times” correspondent). The Revs. Petrie and Keall were also present. After discussion it was decided to hold a service qn the rest resort site, and* resolved rfcb ask returned soldiers to attend in civilian clothes, but to wear medals. Captain Bax was appointed marshal, while it was decided to invite Mr Field, M.P., to take part. Hie Worship the Mayor (Mr Brandon) stated that the band would no doubt assist, and that natives would also help.
