EASTBIURNE borouch VARIOUS MATTERS DEALT WITH AT COUNCIL MEETING. '•MANY SIGNS OF PROGRESS. The monthly meeting of the Eastholjrne Borough Council was held last ©veiling, when there were present:— Tlie Acting-Mayor (Mr W. H. Short), Councillors C. Hartridge, H. McGill, 0. A. Marquis, T. Pilcher and C. L. Green. Leave of absence was granted to the Mayor (Mr D. Mather), who is, at present in Australia. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received from the Director-General of Health re grants by local ' authorities for health services.—Received. , The Department of Internal Affairs wrote relative to the council’s letter which was taken up following the protest from Otago regarding increased audit fees.—The letter -was merely received. The. hon. secretary, Muritai schoolcommittee, made application for concession to schoolboy football teams bn the ferries.—-It was finally decided to grant the request on the application of the headmaster to the Ferry. Company’s officers.
GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT'. The aotiog-general manager (Mr R. 13. Witty) reported that patching had been done on the main, road whore ne-' pessary. In Totara street the contractor had commenced work on,the channelling, but it had hee-n found necessary to deviate somewhat from Mr Hodge’s plans. A few more loads of rotten rock would be necessary at the top of the street, and some alteration to the footpath on the south side. The job should be finished and out of hand by the end of the month. In regard to the recreation ground, the -fence had been completed according to spec-mention, and a start had been muds with the building of the; stoiio wall. A truck of suitable lime had been ordered from Mauricoville and the special soil required for topdressing the cricket pitches would be taken from the land recently purchased by tha council. COAL DEPOT. The receipts and expenditure from. April Ist, 1921, to March 16th, 1922, were ns follows: —ißecgipts, £1156 lus 6d; expenditure, £2028 15s Gd; total, £971 15s. ‘ - COAL DETERIORATING. The manager stated that the rest dents refused to purchase the coal they had in stock. lie fcflsidercd that it had undoubtedly been deteriorating. He proposed, therefore, to unload it oh tho ferries-at the rate of, say, six tons per week, and suggested the, purchase of 50 tons of tho best household coal at once, so that they nvay recover some share of patronage before the winter set in. . v
ASSISTANT TOWN CLERK. • The manager reported that Mr H. W.,Gouk) Jiad been appointed assistant town clerk, : > Mr G. Shore; he said, wa-r taking an intelligent interest in tho traffic, and \yould be ablei to devote more time to this branch of the wprk as Mr Gould became familiar with the work of the office. DISTRICT FUND ACCOUNT. The position of the district fund account up to March 16tli was as follows : Receipts—ostimated receipts—Rates £2089, sanitation £4S9, sundreis, £378; total, £2956. Collected—Rates £1996 Is 4d, sanitation £476 11s 6d, sundries £4Ol os Sd. Outstanding—Rates £92 18s Bd, sanitation £l3 Ss 6d. Expenditure—Estimated expenditure £2903, expended £2431 13s Id, balance available £471 0s lid, land purchase £9OO. BUILDINGS. From April Ist, 1921, to March 21st, 1922, building permits had been issued for work' estimated at £34,701, fees paid thereon totalled £GS 10s. Since the last report permit fees had amounted to £4 15s, to cover work estimated at. £1736 10s. The manager's report was adopted.
