CENTRAL OTAGO LAND
BENEFIT OF IRRIGATION. As an instance of the''increased productivity of the land of Central Otago under the influence of irrigation, Air It. A. bniitii, of Tanas station, told the Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister for Public Works) tlie other day that, although in tho past history of the station no fat sheep hu<| over been sent away, he liad been able this year to fatten and dispatch to the freezing works from Jtlj© irrigated portion of his (and no fewer’ tlian dOOO sheep. Mr Smith add6d that from cue patch’ of 80 ft-ores of lucerne lie. had already obtained 400 tons and he expected to harvest another crop before, the end of the season. In this eonn&tion it is also interesting To note that an Ardgour ficttler told the Minister that from ona small lucerne paddock ho had obtained the remarkable yield’ of eight tons to .the acre—a striking testimony to the quaility of the soil. As the price of baled lucerne last year was a ton on truck, the value of this product, made passible by irrigation, cun easily be seen.
