MOTOR-CAR THEFT
TWO TARANAKI ARRESTS. CAR ABANDONED ON ROAD. The. two young men who were arrested in Taranaki last week in connection with the removal of a motorcar from an Epsom (Auckland) garage gave their names as Stanley Roy Montgomery and Harry Hampton, and their ages as twenty-one. It is alleged that, after obtaining the car, the two men proceeded south, branching off inland. They got about fifteen miles on the northern side of Awakino, where a hitch occurred with the car, and they abandoned it on the roadside. Their undoing came as the result of a telegram from the Hamilton police to'the Waitara police stating that the men were seen driving in that direction. Constable La Pouplo telephoned the message to New Plymouth, and later Montgomery was apprehended at New Plymouth by Detec-tive-Sergeant Cooney and Constable Palmer. Hampton was secured by Constable Blaikie at Tongaporutu, 42 miles from New Plymouth, where he had secured employment. It is stated that a further charge will be made against the men of breaking and .entering a draper’s shop at To Awamutu and stealing a quantity of goods, including seven suits of clothes and some overcoats. Some of the apparel has been recovered.
Hampton was taken to New Plymouth, where both men appeared before the Police Court. They have been remanded to Auckland.
