OVERSEAS MAIL SERVICE
QUESTION OF TERMINAL. WELLINGTON AND AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, March 17. A matter concerning the overseas mail services was brought under the notice of the counoil of the Chamber of Commerce bv Mr R. Burns. The writer said that a peculiar position had arisen in connection wlith the mails from San Francisco to Wellington, and from Vancouver to Auckland. Of late there had always been a much larger mail carried to Wellington than to Auckland. It seemed to him that it was part of the policy of the Union Company to direct the mails to Wellington as far aB possible, and if the company could show, when the Vancouver service came up again for discussion, that the majority of the mails came via WcMington, and not via Auckland, it only meant a matter of time when the company would consequently withdraw the fast service to Vancouver. He consideied the chamber should investigate the matter, otherwise he feared the company might make some arrangement whioh tho chamber would ho unable to alter. The shipping committee was asked to consider the point and report.
