A GREAT SCHEME

At the Premiers’ Conference, Mr VV. M. Hughes explained the scheme for solving the problem of unemployment by developing land settlement and ameliorating unemployment in Great Britain by encouraging immigration. The scheme provides for the unification of the gauges of Australian railways and the opening up of a large number of farms. He proposed that the local unemployed should be the first _ absorbed, and thereafter as many immigrants as work can be found for will be brought to Australia. The condition of the scheme is that a portion of the farms he reserved for British immigrants after they are acclimatised and accustomed to local conditions.
