ALLIANCE CONTROVERSY
OPINION IN JAPAN ABROGATION AS PRELIMINARY TO CONFERENCE. AMERICA’S POSITION. By Telegraph—Press Amo.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 3, 12.50 a.m.) TOKIO, November 1. The newspapers are commenting on reports that the United States would urge the abrogation of the AngloJapanese Alliance as a preliminary to the limitation of armaments. The newspapers editorially point out that the Japanese Government will not necessarily insist on the maintenance of the Altianre, which, in the present form, ia highly discouraging and incompatible with the spirit of the Washington Convention. Japan is prepared to accept an Anglo-American-Japanese compact and to fall back upon the Anglo-Japaneee Alliance only if the Conference results neither in ■ a Triple Entente nor in the limitation of Armaments. OFFENSIVE TO CHINA WASHINGTON, November 1. Liang Juhao, a former Cbinese Foreign Minister, now high adviser to tire Chinese delegates at the Washington Conference, interviewed, said that China regards the Anglo-Japanese Alliance as offensive to her, ana will protest against any attempts at a renewal.
