GETTING WORSE
> POSITION OF BUTTER AND CHEESE MARKET. “TOOLEY STREET BITTEN.” AretreUre The position of the provfancm trade shows no revival, but seems to be goiig from bad to worse. Government stocks of blitter are moving Tory slowly, despite the future redaction in the selling price. Nobody Menu to take any interest in this old stored stuff, and it is suggested that the Government ought to cut its loss, and sell it at any price, or send it in to faipjnestricken Central Europe. The only satisfactory thing in the butter market is the good demand for small arrivals of new Australian butter, which are clearing rapidly. It ia hardly safe to mention the word “ cheese’’ in Tooley street nowadays. Everybody who touches it seems to get bitten. Eight firms which combined to purchase Queensland’s last output at 13}d per lb f.0.b., find it on{y saleable hero at about 80s per r-.vt, so their losses must run into many thousands of pounds. People who .ought Canadian also lost heavily, s. her foods continue on the down 0 i-M, and the public are at last able 4' -i them at something approaching .ai- prices. Excellent butter is now mu retailed at Is lOd and 2s per , ■■■■aud; cheese at lOd and Is.
