EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the last meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr F. H. Mather) presided, and the following were also present:—Councillors Hartridge, Giles, Piloher, Green, and Shortt. ’ The (Eastbourne Bowling Club wrote requesting a rebate of rates in connection with the club’s property. The council decided to remit half the general rate. The Mayor reported that the purchase of a email section in Tuatoru street from Mr iB. Metz had been completed, and only awaited an Order-in-Councu for the purpose of dedicating it as a council reserve, whioh later on would be used as a road connecting up to the recreation ground. On the motion of Councillor Shortt it was decided to erect notice boards in different portions of the borough directing visitors to the recreation ground and to Muritai Park. A license was granted to Mr F. S. 9avager for_ the Crown Theatre for public entertainment. A request from the director of Braund’s orchestra that the band should he granted free passage on the boats to Day's Bay was refused, on the -ground that Day’s Bay was outside the borough boundary. The general manager’s report stated that receipts for coal and wood from April Ist to October 16th totalled £956 15s' 3d, and the expenditure £1649 7s 2d. The stocks in hand exceeded £6OO. The district fund account showed that for the current year rates amounting to £2079 3s 4d had been collected, and £876 16s 8d was still outstanding. The expenditure up to October 16th had been £1514 6s _7d, leaving an estimated balance available for the unexpired portion of the year of £1434 12s 9d. Building permits for the month represented a value of £3726, which included a children’s retreat for the Salvation Army costing £ISOO, flour dwellings, and additions. The. permit fees amounted to £7 15s. From April Ist to date 47 permits had been issued, re[presenting buildings of a total estimated value of £19,790, the fees paid thereon amounting to £36 ss. The general manager suggested that the council should undertake to conduct a circulating library for the benefit of residents. He was requested to furnish a report in regard to expense of initiation and other details. Several additional offers of secondhand steamers have been received by thq council, and these, with others, will be considered by the special committee after the poll on the council’s proposals in connection with the ferry service.
