BOXING DISPUTE
REMARKABLE BOUT AT CLEVELAND. . REFERESE’S DECISION UPSET. Australian and N.Z. Acfsordativ. (Received July 29, 8.5 p.in.) NEW YORK, July 23. The middleweight boxing championship is in dispute following oh an extraordinary bout between Bryan Downey, of Columbus, and "Johnny” Wilson, of Cleveland, fought at Cleveland. The Boxing Commission and sports writers declare that Downey won by a knock-out in the seventh round of the "scheduled twelve-round no-decision bout. The referee, "Jimmy** Gardner, however, declared Wilson the winner on a fout. Wilson was knocked down three times in the final round. The first time the referee only counted nine, while the timekeeper says Wilson was on the floor for thirteen seconds. The second time the referee again counted nine, whereas the time-keeper says Wilson was out for eleven eeeonds. When Wilson was floored the third time the manager jumped into the ring and tried to hold him up, but Wilson fell. The referee counted seven* an<l then stopped the bout, saying that Downey struck 'his opponent when down. One hundred spectators (Leaped into the ring and attempted to hit the referee, whereupon the Boxing Commission announced Downey the winner.
