The visitors were ’defeated after a ciosc and exciting game by tho narrow margin of three points, am unconverted try to nil. Wellington attacked from the onset, and soon had Auckland in difficulties. From a scrum in front of * the gqpl Auckland cleared, but soon after tho' visiting backs again got-going, and Auckland forced. From a line-out the local forwards, broke through, but the ball was kicked too hard, and the Wellington full-back found the line. Shortly afterwards the Auckland backs secured the ball from - a scrum, and Fry made a good opening with a fine doddy rum, the three-quarter line, Pollock Ellice and Shanagham. taking part in a passing rush. Fry cut in again, and forced his way over near the corner. Webb , s kick failed. Both sides now set a fast pace, the backs throwing the ball about* well. Again and again the Wellington half-back, Moschino, set his backs going, but the ball frequently wont astray. The local rearguard were also- handling the ball well, Fry and Lovoridge being very prominent- Wellington kept up the attack, and finally Gregg gathered the bail up from tho loose amt! forced . his way over, but was brought back for infringing. Give -nmdtakb play followed, and tlie Wellington forwards again had Auckland in difficulties. Bowe had a’ fine shot at goal, but -was unsuccessful. Wellington was getting the ball from the scrums, but Auckland's tackling was sound. Half, time sounded with no change in the scores. - On resuming Auckland attacked strong, ly, the back© working well, but could not increase their score. The Wellington forwards held their own in the loose, but the backs spoiled many fine chances. Play wiae confined to the visitors' territory for the greater part of the second spell, though their forwards several times broke through and eeemw as though they would scot©. The came ended with Auckland attacking strongly in front of .Wellington's goaJ, the scores remaining: .Auckland, 3; Wellington, 0. Mr W. Meredith was referee.
