WORKERS’ CONCESSIONS

CHEAP RATES ON TRAMS CABINET DECLINES TO ABOLISH PRIVILEGES. "TIME INOPPORTUNE.” As a means of improving the finances of the tramway undertaking the late City Council, on the recommendation of the general manager (Mr W. H. Morton) last year decided that workers* concession tickets should be abolished. It was- pointed out that workers were being carried on the trams for less than £d per car mile on the concession* and that the actual cost to the department was Id. Subsequently a resolution was passed asking the-Goverament to delete from the Oraer-in-Council governing the corporation tramways the provision relating to workers* -conceshons. Representations were also mode to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. J. G. Coates) on the matter. The Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) has received from the Minister the following communication:—“Referring to the interview which you and the City Council officers had with mo relative tG drafting Order-in-Oouncil No. 13 (Wellington Oity Tramways) particularly in regard to the proposed exclusion of the workers’ concession fares: I have now to advise you that Cabinet has very carefully considered your representation in the matter, hut it is regretted that the present appears to be an inopportune time, so far as the workers sire concerned, to deprive them of the privilege which they have so long enjoyed.” The Mayor had no comment to make upon the matter when questioned ‘by a “Times” representative yesterday.
