THE SPRINGBOKS

NEW ZEALAND I AN EASY VICTORY ON THE WEST COAST. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. GREiYMOUTH, July 27. The Springboks defeated the West Coast and Duller Union “reps." by E 3 points to 3. The weather was lovely, and four thousand people were present. A try by Wepener and three fine penalty goals by De Villiers made the halftime score 12 to nil. Tries were scored in the second spell by Zeller' (three), ScSnden, and Mostert, three being converted by De Villiers. The local forwards held their own in the first half and in the loose till near the end. but there was no combination among the backs, who were weak in attack and defence. The accurate passing of the visiting backs led to all the tries but the last, which resulted from a fine forward attack. The only local score, was a. penalty goal by Steel. Except in occasional loose rushes bv the Coast forwards, play® was seldom in the Springboks territory. At the opening even forward play was followed by the Springboks backs passing: Zeller was collared, and then a cross-kick from Van Heerdcn to Town send, Senden, and Wepener, saw the latter score. The Coast tackling generally was poor. ’ The visitors had. the better of the serums, but tbe open work of the Coast forwards evened matters. The advantage in the line out arid scrums were mostly wiith the Springboks, who used the touchline. The trood defensive play of Ryan helped the Coast. Van Heerden twice got away, and was grassed once. Later he hurdled over the full-back and over the line, failing to touch down. Townsend, Michau, and Wepener always prominent in passing bouts, and De Villiers let nothing pass him. O’Callaglian was aggessive, occasionally for the' losers, and the scores were not a fair criterion of the first half, but in the second spell the visitors mastery was marked, and grew as play progressed. They worked the blind side of the scrum, scoring thus a couple -f tries. . . Van Rooyen, Mostert, and Olivier stood out in the visitors’ pack, while Townsend, Zeller. Michau, and AVepener were the most prominent of the backs. Mouatt was the best Coast forward. The game generallv was on the slow side, the weight of the visitors giving them the mastery over a_ lighter team, lacking combination and initiative. . A feature of the game was the accurate goal and line kicking”' of De Villiers, tho Springboks full-back. THIRD TEST MATpH. POSTPONEMENT - DEFINITELY ANNOUNCED.

The New Zealand Rugby -Union notified the Wellington Rugby Union yesterday that the third Test had boon definitely fixed for September 17th.. The’Springboks do not leave on the return trip until September 19th, and on (account of the alterations to steamship soilings, and the visit to New Zealand of a New South Wales team, it is doubtful -if any matches will be played in Sydney oil route to South Africla. The postponement of the date of the third Test may mean that the Springboks’ match’ against Nelson and Marlborough will be .played on Saturday, September 3rd ’ instead of in August. - During the extra .period between this match and the Test a match against the Maoris will be played,- probably at Wellington. Two curtain-raisers are being arranged for the Test, one of which may be a match, between the King Country and tho "Wellington B representatives. The Manawatu Rugby Union intends asking the "Wellington Rugby Union to allow the Manawatu-Horowheuuh. team to play its return match with Wellington as a curtain-raiser to the third Test match against the . Springboks’ team. "The Springboks," "A Wellington Insult." These are the two headings which the Wairarapa “Daily Times” affixes to tho request forwarded by the Mayor of Wellington for a return match with the South African footballers towards 1 the close of their tour.
