MORE GOAL TROUBLE
GENERAL STRIKE MOOTED ALLEGATIONS OF REDUCING THE HEWING RATE. THREAT TO CALL MEN OUT. According to information given to a representative of the “Times” yesterday another trouble is on the horizon.
The secretary of the coal-miners, Mr J. Arbuckle, stated, yesterday, that the owners of the New Brighton mine have notified the men of a reduction of 2e per ton as from June 6th. Mr Arbuckle further stated that the federation had instructed the union to give the manager of the mine until Monday next to pay the' old rates, and, failing compliance with this, the men will be called out, and the federation will then decide whether all miners will cease work, or what action will be taken.
“Let me say,” added Mr Arbuckle, “that this action on the part of the owners will be sufficient to show the value of the employers’ word so far as their promise to stabilise wages is concerned.”
