AERIAL MAILS
— « MISHAP TO SEAPLANE. PILOT AND MECHANIC RESCUED. »m ranaa assacsATiow. WHANGAREI, May 17. A serious mishap occurred yesterday afternoon to a seaplane carrying tho return mail from Onerahi to Auckland. A strong, gusty wind was blowing when the journey was commenced, and am the engine was working badly the pilot had some diffioulty in getting the 'plane to rise. Before any appreciable height was attained, the engine stalled, and the ’planer hit the water at a great speed and dived, the meehanio being thrown out. The weight of the engine dragged the nose of the ’plane to the bottom in twelve feet of water. ' The pilot and the mechanic held on till a. launch effected « rescue. The mail was saved. It will bd necessary to cut the planes off the machine before it con he towed in. This operation is proceeding.
