RANGE BLOWN TO PIECES. *tE eaxrs juiocutid" , WAIHI, May 17. A mysterious explosion, apparently caused by gelignite, placed in a kitchen range in the Commercial Boardinghouse, occurred at 1.30 o’clock this morning. Flying pieces of iron were hurled through a partition into the diningroom and mare or lees damage was done to the building and contents. The circumstances are regarded as somewhat suspicious. The police are investigating. Among the debris near the stove they found a piece of fuse, which, it is assumed, was attached to the explosive used. The boardinghouse in question is the one where the hoarders refused to pay a higher tariff rate, which had been demanded by the proprietress. The proprietress asked for 335, the men stood out for a tariff of 32s 6d. Eventually _ the proprietress declared her intention of closing the kitchen and dining-room, and allowing the boarders the use of the bedrooms at fla per week.
