The Swiss census, which took place shortly before Christmas, shows the smallest increase in the population hitherto recorded. This is partly due to the great exodus of foreigners caused by the war, and partly to the fact that emigration is again in full swing. Allahabad is the holy city of the Indian Mohammedans. Benares is the holy e!Ty of the Hindus, 'jrhile Cuzco is -Shat of the ancient/ Incae. Jerusalem is the holy city of the Jews and Christians. Mecca, Medina, and I>amascus have first place in the affections of the Mohammedans. Bears, which include the largest of all existing flesh-eating land animals, constitute a family to themselves'. We speak of the bear family, of which the scientific name is TJrsidae. Although bears are numerous as individuals, they are few in epeciew, and all grouped into two genera. We do not feel the earth moving for the same reason that we cannot feel a boat move as it glides with the stream, that we cannot feel a train moving over smooth rails or road.
