RAGING PERMITS

WHAT WILL THE! GOVERNMENT DO? A QUESTION IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The Hon. M. Cohen has given notice to ask the Leader of the Legislative Council the following question : "Seeing that it is not the intention of Parliament to meet (as usual) in June next for the transaction of tho ordinary business of the country, is it the intention of the Government to exercise during the recess the powers conferred by the Gaming Act Amendment Act, 1920, and to issue new or additional totalisator permits?’* To his question Mr Cohen appended this note:—“To issue additional permits by Order-in-Council as above indicated will have the effect, it. is alleged, of nullifying the spirit and purpose of subsections 5 and 6 of the said Act, thereby depriving Parliament of its statutory right to assent to or dissent from any »uc.h Order-in-CouncU that may authorise the issue of new or additional totalizator permits.”
