TROUBLE ABOUT MISSING MONEY.

A young man named Charles Victor Daj-ton, who made his debut in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.. yesterday, on a charge of stealing a quantity of clothing, etc., to the value of £5 18s, and belonging to'las room-mate, Thomas Fearon, apparently believed in the old-time motto “deeds, not words,” for it was alleged that he had stolen the goods to recompense him for the sum of three pounds which he had accused his room-mate (complainant) of stealing on March 9th.

For the police, Sub-Inspector Willis stated that both parties had met in apartments on Thoundon quay, and were thrown together by the winds of chance, being obliged to occupy the same room. The accused had spent the night in the company of some females and lively company generally, hut in the morning found that his assets had been reduced by the sum of £3 in cash. Be accused the complainant, who strenuously denied the act. However, later, tho accused had stolen the goods enumerated above and been subsequently found with them in his possession at another residence. For the accused, Mr A. B. Sievwright stated that the man woe a ship’s steward by occupation, and had only been paid off two days previously. His action had been due to the fact that he honestly believed that the complainant had taken the money. He was fined £5 and given the option of serving 14 days in gaol.
