“ LABOUR'S FIGHT”
LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. There was a crowded house at the Empress Theatre last night to hear brief addresses by the Labour members of Parliament on the subject of “Labour’s Fight in the Short Session.” Many were unable to secure admission. Mr P. Fraser (Wellington Central) occupied the chair, and a pleasing programme of vocal and instrumental items whiled away the time between the opening of the doors and the commencement of the meeting. In addition to the chairman, the speaker® were Messrs H. E. Holland (Buller), chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, J. McCombs (Lyttelton), E. J. Howard (Christ-, church South), .W. E. Parry (Auckland Central), M. J. Savage (Auckland West), F. N. Bartram (Grey Lynn), and D. G. Sullivan (Avon). Strong opposition was expressed to the Prime Minister leaving New Zealand at the present juncture, involving, according to the Government’s programme, the holding up of the business of the country by a long Parliamentary recess ; and it wae held that the Dominion should be represented at the Imperial Conference by the High Commissioner, but without power to commit the country to any line of policy. The necessity for resisting every movement in the direction of increased armaments, naval or military, was also strongly stressed; and it was urged that- an endeavour should be made to link up the peoples of all countries by the silken bonds of peaceful trade and industry.
