LIBERAL CAUCUS

MR McCALLCM PROTESTS. ■ PRESUMPTUOUS—IMPROPER.’’ The attention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives ra called by Mr R. MoCallum (Wairau) yesterday to the following statement furnished to and appearing in the Press:— “A caucus of the Liberal Party was held yesterday morning in the room off the Leader of the Opposition (Mr T. M. Wilford). All the members of the party were present or accounted for.’’ Mr MqCaUum said that he claimed to be a Liberal, but he was qot present ■ l that meeting. He was not informed of the meeting, and he did not recognise Mr Wilford as Leader of the Liberal Party. Mr Wilford was only a leader of one of the several coteries of Oppositionists. (Laughter.) It was, he declared, irregular, presumptions, and improper to furnish to any public paper such a report as that referred to. He wanted to make it quite clear and distinct that he was not and would not be connected with that particular coterie of Oppositionists. (Laughter.) Mr T. M. Wilford (Hutt), Leader of the Opposition, stated that - he had furnished the paragraph to the papers, ind it only alluded to members of the Liberal Party led by him-. AIR T. E. T. SEDDON PRESENT. Mr T. E. Y. Seddon (Westland) desires it to be stated that he was among those present at the Liberal caucus meeting on Thursday. Air Seddon, in fact, is junior whip of the party.
