Fierce street-lighting continues in ■Petrograd. which Is entirely in the hands of the revolutionaries. Trotsky ami Zinovieff are defending the prison of St. Peter and St.. Paul, and Brusiloff is organising the Soviet troop 9 in Pctrograd. lie ordered n regiment of Basliku Finns and Chinese mercenaries to clear the .streets. The Ikishkus refused to fire and joined the revolutionaries after attacking the Chinese. The Soviet holds all the roads leading to Petrograd. The Soviet infantry. in an attempt to retake Kronstadt, was beaten hack over the ice. According to Pctrograd reports some, of the iruns first shelled Kronstadt, then suddenly switched oil to 'Pettrograd. lit is not known whether this is due to a change in sympathies or fuller information. The guns are now shelling Kronstadt, which is interpreted to mean that the “Reds” have captured the former, or that original sentiments have been restored. FOOD 18 POWER - WHY THE INSURRECTION MIGHT FAIL. LONDON, March 9. Mr Tom Skeyhill, who returned recently from Russia, thinks the counterrevolution has been prematurely precipitated, and. probably will he unsuccessful, because food constitutes power in Russia, and the Bolsheviks hold the food. Kronstadt can be easily isolated and starved, and also Petrograd. The [Bolsheviks would then bring up their mercenaries and exterminate the revolutionaries. Even if temporarily successful, -the counter-revolution only means that Russia would be out of the fryingpan into the fire, because the “Whites” are equally as incapable as Hie "‘Reds” of constructive governihent. It would merely mean Balkanising. Russia. IN SIBERIA SEMENOFF'S COUNTER-REV OLUTION. ZURICH. March 9. The Grand Duke Michael has joined Semenoff’s . counter-revolutionaries in Siberia, who have commenced an offensive against the “Reds,” and taken prisoner five thousand, and captured twenty-eigh t guns.
