Autumn. April 13 and 14 —Manaivatu R.C. Autumn. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine.”) The Napier Park meeting opens today, and will be concluded to-morrow. The Cup has drawn a very interesting field. Heathersprig and the crack three-year-old, Duo, are two of the most fancier* candidates. A handy light-weight is Paonni on -whom H- Ryder will have the mount. The field for the Maiden is a weak one, and includes Blissfulness, who has done a fair amount of racing. The Marlborough meeting ends to-day. There ia a good-sized field in the Maiden. Marifr.a is very fast, and of the others Russet may go well. The Cup fiold is weak, and Matatua. is a class above the others, but he haa a big weight, and this may bring him back to Sir Fanciful and l Ladify. However, those who have -seen the racing at Nelson and Blenheim like his chance. Lord Usk is top-weight in two of the hack events, and he will Re -well supported in whichever he starts. Sweet Memory and Barleycorn 'have big weights to carry in the open sprints. However, they must he considered. Fortune Teller again show tip. The Wellington sportsman, Mr Harold Brown, has -undergone an operation in a Wellington private hospital, and is progressing well.

The Stewards' Handicap winner Michaela is still turned out, but this good mare is to be taken up soon and prepared for winter and spring engagements-

H. Goldfinch did particularly well on the East Coast. Alter riding fire winders at Opotiki ho motored to Tologa 'Bay and won a double on Jovial. An Eliersiie trainer wag the victim of a sneak thief on Wednesday last. Intending leaving for Te Aroha on Thursday morning, he hung a good- suit of clothes, with 'a gold watch and chain in the -pocket, over the rails of the verandah to air, only to find them missing when 'he returned a few hours later ‘to take them in. The mutter is in the hands of the police. Stephen Donogliue, who is at the head of the jockeys in the Old' Country, is a well-advertised young man. "Vigilant,” writing in the “London Sportsman,” says:—"Within the past five years Donoghue has twice won the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St. Leger, the greatest ‘treble’ in tlho racing world, first on Pommern and again: on Gay Crusader. None of the classics fell to his share last season, which saw him at the head of the winning jockeys for the seventh year in stfecession with. 143 winners, the largest total of his career. Being able to rule at the convenient weight of 7.8, without wasting. Donoghue had the enormous number of 632. mounts. He rode in 162 races more than any other jockey.”
