COST OF LIVING
OFFICIAL FOOD FIGURES. The Government Statistician’s Attract for February showed that the cost of living represented by the three food groups—groceries, dairy produce, and meat —for January last is down 9 point*, but an increase of 78.13 per cent, a* compared with the cost for July, 1914. The amount of money required to purchaae food that -El would have purchased in July, 1914, in Wellington dnd the four centres combined is as follow: Dec. 1930. Dec. 1919. s. d. s. d. Wellington 37 10 32 6} Four centres 38 0i 32 8J The four centres’ average worth of JBI. taking its purchasing power in July, 1914, as a basis for December, 1920. is —Groceries, 10s OJd; dairy produce. 10s 10Jd; meat. 13s 5d - three food group*. 11s 3d. That is what in terms of food the J£l of July, 1914, is worth today. There has been a substantial fall in the price of stock, which should be reflected in lower prices for meat in the reports of the Government Statistician for February and March. Clothes, boots and shoe-, fuel, lighting, and other cost-of-living items are not dealt with in the above figures.
