DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
AIR J. CAUGHLEY. M.A., APPOINTED. The Public Sen fee Commissioner ns. tifies the appointment of Air J. Caughley, Af.A.. to the position of Director of Education in succession to Dr Anderson, who is about to retire on superannuation. Air Caughley is at present AssistantDirector of Education, to which position he was appointed on January 24th, 1916. Prior to his appointment to this position he had 28 years’ experience as a teacher in three education districts, covering every class of school in New Zealand. Air Caughley was born at Auckland on February 9th, 1871. He went through his earlier training in tho Hawke’s Bay educational district. At the opening of the Wellington Training College for Teacher®, in 1906, ho was appointed assistant in charge of the secondary department. During his university studies he was on the roll of the university colleges of Canterbury, Victoria and Auckland. He was awarded the AI.A. degree in 1905, and also gained the Bowen Essay Prize of the New Zealand University. As Assistant-Director Air Caughley has had a good opportunity of obtaining a wide knowledge of the professional and administrative side of the work of the department in all its branches. ; He is well read in educational literature and his views in this connection are regarded as orthodox and progressive. Ho has been intimately connected with the teachers’ grading schema since its inception, and through frequent visits to different parts of New Zealand has come in personal contact with the leading teachers and education officials of the Dominion.
