Last evening the executive of the Wellington Rugby Union presented Air W. W. Cook with a silver cake basket on the occasion of his marriage. Mr .W. F. Skerrett, K.C., president of the New Zealand-- Law Society, has been asked to speak in behalf of the legal profession generally, and Air H. F. O’Leary, president of the Wellington District Law Society, will speak for the Wellington members of the profession. To-morrow references will be made to the late Sir James Prendergast, formerly Chief Justice. The speakers on this occasion will be Sir Francis Bell and Mr C. P. Skerrett.

Further details are to hand concerning Air Thomas Parsons, Alayor of Eketahuna, who passed away at his residence at an early hour on Sunday morning, at the advanced age of 79 years. He was a. Justice of the Peace and an ardent supporter of all. kinds of sport, having been president of the Eketahuna Hack Racing Club and many athletic bodies. 'He was also one of the pioneer® of the dairy industry in the Forty-Alile Bush. It was largely through his efforts that the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union was formed, and h,e had ’been chairman of directors of the union for many years. He also took a keen interest in Farmers’ Union matters.

By a recent American mail. Air F. W. G. McLeod, of Now Plymouth, received an offer to take up the ‘musical directorship of one of the foremost military concert bands, with, headquarters at San Francisco. The membership varies from 37 to 44, according to requirements, and embraces reeds, wood-wind, strings and brass. Air Papakakura is singing two of Air AloLeod’s song compositions on the Chautauqua circuit platform this season, and the above offer is attributed to the publicity given to the composer’s name by this means. However, the invitation has been declined, owing to the continued illness of ATrs ArcLeod, and other reasons.

Air T. B. Ponsonby, of the Alliance Assurance Company, Ltd., who has spent the past six weeks in New Zealand on tour of inspection, leaves Wellington for Australia and Londor by this week’s steamer.

Mr Frank Goidlterg, managing director of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., leaves by the Marama on a business trip to the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. He expects to be away from New Zealand about nine mouths.

The only criminal case before the session of tfie Supreme Court ta Napier, which opened yesterday,! was one in which Richard William Conglan was charged with indecently assaulting young girls. Accused pleaded guilty, and it- was submitted on his behalf that he was of weka intellect- His Honour accepts dthe evidence as to the weakmindedness of the accused and attributed the crime to this rather than to criminal purpose. The accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.—Press Association.

Tho directors of the Alliance Assurance Company, of London, have made the following appointment®:—To b® general manager for New Zealand at the companv’s head office at Wellington, Air Robert Caughley, at present manager of the Christchurch branch office; to be manager of the Christchurch branch in place of Air Caughley, Air H. T. Francis, at present chief clerk at that brnch. The company’s manager at the Auckland branch, Mr Bartholomew Kent, having. on account of his advanced age, expressed the wish to retire, after thirty-seven years’ service, the directors have, with much regret, accepted his resignation, and have appointed an his successor, Mr Wilfrid Skegg, at present assistant-manager of the Wellington branch.
