PLEA FOR REASON
BRITISH MINERS’ ATTITUDE TRIPLE ALLIANCE FAVOURS GIVE-AND-TAKE POLICY. Mr SMILLIE’S APPEAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October Bth, 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 7th. It is understood that various discussions by the Triple Alliance made it clear that the miners must pursue a reasonable attitude of give-and-take. The miners could not ask large bodies of workmen to strike when the difference between, the two sides was only a shilling a day. Although executives of many of the leading coal districts have declared, against the owners’ terms, the Government does not attach any importance to the fact, believing that thouga the hotheads captured a machine vote the average miner will oast his vote for peace. Mr Robert Smillie lias issued a strong appeal, declaring that it would be in the best interests of the miners to accept the proposals as a temporary measure, utilising the next three months to secure a satisfactory agreement ; and that also, it would give an opportunity to 4 prove that the declining output was mainly duo to owners rather than the miners.
