DENTAL BURSARIES
AN EXPLANATION IN PARLIAMENT. Replying to a question in the. House of Representatives yesterday, the Minister for Public Health (the Hon. C. J. Pftrr), stated that last year- the Health Department had established 20 bursaries, with i'so a year each, tor a fouivyears' dental course at Dunedin University. Twelve of these had been allotted to. students in the. south island and eight to. persons in the nor.tn island. Only. one. bursar went from Wellington,' and one from Auckland, aUd lie , thought thai,, tho , fact that there was, such a system of bursaries and that the system of selection should be, reconsidered. The bursars were now; selected by the Otago University; and lie , thought that the university might still nominate them, but the final selection ishould rest with the department, and there should be a better distribution from the territorial point of view. It might be, he added, that the. Public Health Department Would apply i*> Parliament to take action to. increase largely the, number of dentists. The. bursars, were required, at the end of their course to give one. year of service to the State at. a salary of £3OO. That service generally took the shape of being attached to a hospital. It was also proposed to make use of some of tho bursars , for the dental treatment of school children.
