SOLDIERS' PROTEST
LADY CLERKS AND-PRIVATE FILES. The fact that tho handling and ia» vestigation of military files at the Baso • Eecoi-ds Office is entrusted to women was the subject of a discussion at the last annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, and as a result protests against the practice were forwarded to the Minister, asking that it bo discon--1 tinued. "Women have been employed In the Base Records Office, and have handled the files during tho whole period of the war," stated the Minister, in reply, "and it is not considered desiri «blo ftfc this late stage to substitute by male clerks the comparatively email number of women now employed there, especially in view «*f the fact that the employment is only of » ternporary nature." • ( In reply to a request from the association that the Government should publicly reaffirm that the files were v absolutely inviolate, even to tho police, tho Slinister has stated that the files are not open to tho police, nor i? any information as to anything detrimental in a soldier's military history disclosed.
