HOROWHENUA COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL DISTRICT AND OTHER MATTERS DEALT WITH. (Special to the '‘Times.’’) The ordinary monthly meeting of the above council was held at Levin on Saturday. Present: Councillors G. A. Monk (chairman), J. R. Whyte, H. Barber, W. J. Bryant, F. J. Ryder, Jas. 'MoLeavcy, C. I. Harkness, and F. Coley.
Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: —
State Advances Office, , stating a grant of £3945 for Waikawa Beach road was available.—Received. a Department of Industries, stating that m view of the fact of the demand for cement, bricks, and timber, tiie Government had decided that some restriction be placed on works to be carried, out in order to ensure that these materials should not be applied to rxm-essential works.—Left % to the chairman and dork to attend to.
Publio Works Department, enclosing cheque for £l5O for improvement to Waikawa Beach road.—Received.
Waimairi County Council, asking that it be supported in a resolution to promote legislation to allow the Canterbury Hospital Board "to borrow money for permanent buildings, and that the Government grant a subsidy on money raised.—No action. Hamilton Borough Council, suggesting that the import duty on cement be removed, and asking the representation to this effect bo made to tho Government.—To be supported. Manawatu .County Council, asking to be supported in a move to give magistrates drastic power to deal with motor-car accidents, which were becoming too frequent on account of negligent driving.—Agreed to. Waikanae Cemetery Trustees, asking for a refund of £4 10s for A. Baudt, paid for plots, from which a body had been > removed for interment at Waikanae.—Not entertained.
Palmerston North Hospital Board, applying for payment of £424 due under the provisions of the Washing-up Bill.—To bo paid. Shannan branch of tho Workers’ Educational Institute, applying for a grant to its funds.—£lo granted. Clerk of Otaki Town Board, suggesting the Justice Department bo asked to reduce the salary of the Licensing Clerk from £25 to £lO.-—No action.
G. Anderson (Otaki) drawing attention to the bad- state of Te Mannao road. —To bo attended to. B. Musso, drawing attention to damage being done to his land at Ohau by flood water which drained from the council’s to tho engineer.
L. H .Arcus (Ohau), drawing attention to tho dangerous speed of motorists when passing by the Ohau School, and suggesting a hurdle be installed to prevent such driving in future. —To be inquired into-
A. H. Burgesa (Waikanae), asking that overhanging trees and hedges be out.—To be attended to. C- Noes (secretary Peace Memorial Committee at Manakau), asking permission to erect a cenotaph on the roadside at Manakau.—Granted.
H. D. Atkinson (secretary N.Z.;.A.), asking for particulars in respect to native lands, viz., area and value of land, amount of rates collectable and already collected.—To he supplied . Mrs McClure (Tokomaru) asking for permission to graze stock on road.— Declined.
