CLOSING OF MAILS

IMPROVEMENT ASKED FOR AT OTAKI. (Special to ''Times.") The inconvenient hour of closing the morning mail at Otaki, which debars residents from posting parcels to catch the 9.27 a.m. train, to Wellington,.was brought before Mr W. .H. Field, M.P., by members of the Otaki Town Board. After considerable delay the following telegram has now been received from the Hon. J. G. Coates: ''.Re closing of Otaki mail I have made inquiries and find that the mail closes at 9 a.m., and is delivered to the contractor at 9.5 a.m., allowing him fifteen minutes between Otaki and Otaki railway, including time taken to pick up and set down passengers on arrival at station. The contractor has only seven minutes to deliver a bag at Otaki railway post office, place three bags on the train, and take delivery of several inward bags. The time of closing mail cannot be extended without great possibility of missing connection. Apparently those "who made representations in the matter were under the impression that the train left at 9.40 a.m., whereas under present timetable the train leaves at 9.27. Probably you are not aware that arrangements already exist for acceptance of express 1 transit parcels between ~8.45 and 9 a.m. I regret ihat it is not possible to do anything furthter,."
