FIXTURES. July 14 and 17—Wellington R.C. Winter. July 22—South Canterbury Hunt Steeple, chase. July 81—Brackenfield Hunt Race Meeting. August 10. la and 14—C.J.C. Grand National. NOTES AND COMMENTS ■ 'By "Carbine,”) Wellington acceptances close on Friday. The Wellington owners. Messrs Dwan Brothers, have entered their Demosthenes—Rose Shield filly the C.J.C Challenge Stakes and other classics. The ' Martian—Nerve colt. • which was bred by Mr lan Duncan and sold at hia sale of yearlings in Wellington last January, has been called 2©ro iiour. Wheatfleld is the name bestowed on tho Messrs Kiddiiord’s imported Buckwheat colt. Members ci 'the Levin, dub informed "Carbine” when they >v*r© in ton recently that considerable impcrovemente a-re being mad© to th© appointments at their course. The stand is being enlarged and improved, and minor. but important, appointments are having a good deal of money spent upon them, Brunswick is to -join F. Higgott s team at Otaki, but as ho cannot get passage by boat he is to be walked from Gisborne to Napier and there entrain for Otaki. Among the Riddiford-owned youngsters being got ready at Trentham are Tolerance, by Boniform —Innocence; W neatfield, by Buckwheat—Aunlamina; Left, by Martian—Lovelorn; Pageant, by Martian—Grand Opera; and Quest, by Martian —Triohas. Left is a full sister to Msnelaus, with whom the same sportsman won some good races, including a New Zealand Gup. Levin is following the good example of other clubs and is improving its totalisator house. By the time the meeting is held the facilities for investing will be much greater than previously. The "tote” building is being enlarged and additional windows are being put in.

■ The Wellington M.P.. who races as Mr P. Soames, has a'grey colt by King Rufus —Ma Mie Rosette in .work at Trentham. Among the Aucklanders to put in an appearance at Trentham this week is Scrap o’ Paper. Hector Gray, who, for many years resided in New Plymouth, > has forsaken the Taranaki capital and gone to reside at Remuera. Itris stated that L. H. Hewitt is about to leave New Zealand .to settle in India or England. Although the Trentham mare Bonnie Maid is at present in the South Island, she will not be a runner in the Winter Cup, the principal flat event of the Grand National meeting. , There are some who think that the Canterbury Jockey Club would have been wise to close their nominations later than; usual this year, because of the transport trouble. However, the club has received a very fine list of entries; : Locho-lla and Slowcoach each been nominated for both the Welling-, ton Steeplechase and the Winter Hurdles to be run at Trentham on Jult 14th. In' the Steeplechase Lochella has 12.7 and Slowcoach 10.9. In the Hurdles their weights are 1.1.7 and 9.9. It is Understood that Slowcoach is to start in the Steeplechase, end perhaps that will bo Locheila’s mission also. . Sir James Carroll has a promising yearling filly, by EUbroney—Taringa-mutu,'-which will probably be seen with the colours up next season, , The dam was well-known in this district, where she ran many good races. ’ The complaints about the weights at which Thrace was : being handicapped were not’strengthened bv the gelding's winning form on the East Coast, aud thev can have had little effect on Mr H Coyle, who ha® given him top-weight (11.12) in the Winter Hurdles at Wei-, LLngton. An interesting entry for the_ Grand National Hurdles is that of Gazique, who won the Winter Cup at the. corresponding meeting a year ago. The Gazeley gelding has a lot of pace, gets a middle distance well, and can carry big weights, «o it would not be surprising to see him turn out a useful hurdler as time goes 0D - . T,Sunart, who has bc©n detained at Kiccarton, is to be given a run in the Winter Cup, and if the North Island horses do not get down to the meeting he may be one of the strong fancies, provided bo does not get too much weight. The Sunnv Lake gelding ran a good second to Royal. Star on his last public appearance, did excellent track wor*r subsequently, and was fancied for the Kaukawa Cup by his party, who, however, were unable to get him to Otaki. Stakes are being increased all round, and the "Star” says the next Takapuna Cup may be worth JUSOO. The horses Tenacious, Maira, Tresor, and Commission were offered for sale by auction in Auckland on Friday, but in each instance bidding fell short of the reserve, and they wore passed in. An Ellerslie trainer was after Commission, but the price quoted <4oogns) did not lead to business. It is understood that .£350 would have purchased Tenacious, and that the best bid was nearly ,£IC« short of that amount. .

T. Quinlivan has severed his connection with Mrs Perry’s stables, and has set up as a free lance at Hastings, where he has Pente (the full-sister to Karo), a rising two-year-old by — La Notto, and a colt of the same age by Wolawa— Float under his charge. It is the intention of the Hawke’s Bay trainer to have a short holiday before starting in earnest again.
