NEW TELEPHONE DIRECTORY

ALTERATIONS TO NUMBERS. FACILITATING CONNECTIONS. Tho""Telopl>oue Dei>artment is issuing the new Directory on Tuesday, the 6th mst., and users of the telephone are reminded bv advertisement in this issue that extensive alterations to numbers have-been made. In addition to numerous changes from manual to automatic working, a new departure in the allotting of numbers has been made which ehould prove of great benefit to business firms, clients, and also the Exchange attendants. For instance -. Many large firnis nowhove small annunciators fitted in their premises to which are joined three or more exchange connections. If the first number asked for Is engaged, it is, under tho existing arrangement, necessary for the caller to ask for the next number on the list, and so on, until all the available numbers have been tried. Under the new arrangement, however, the caller should- ask for one number omly< and without any further request the exchange attendant will do the rest by trying all the numbers allotted to that particular firm.. By this means a desired connection should be obtainable with a minimum of delay, as it is not likely that nil three or more numbers will Tbe engaged simultaneously. It is important that users of the telephone refer to the new Telephone Directory only, after to-morrow.
