■ DUNCAN WINS ENGLISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. ’ j Australian and N.Z.‘ Cable Association. (Received July 2, 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 1. In the open golf championship at Deal, George Duncan won with a score of 303. The detailed scores were Duncan 303. Herd 300, E. Kay 303, Mitchell 307, Holland (of Northampton, "’ho played a magnificent. 71 to-day) and J. Barnes (America) each 306. Tliis was the first contest since 1914, and consisted of seventy-two holes medal play. The last open championship was woii by the great Harry Vardan, whose score was 306. Although Duncan’s score lias been several times beaten, his 303 for 72 holes makes him out to be a player worthy to be ranked with the greatest. The record is held by J. Braid, who in 1903 accomplished the feat with a score of 291. Duncan hails from Aberdeenshire, and is 37 years of age.
