ATHLETICS
OLYMPIC GAMES OP 1920.
SOMETHING OF COMPETITORS. Although athletic sports are out of season in the Dominion, sportsmen throughout New Zealand are keenly interested in the forthcoming Olympiad of 1920, at which some of our foremost athletes will 'compete. In a letter to Mr A. Marryatt, president of the New Zealand Olympic Council, H. E. Wilson, champion hurdler and manager of the New Zealand team, which is aboard the Euripides, states; “Mi Merrbti met us on the wharf at Sydney, also Mrs Chambers (of N.S.W.' Ladies’ Swimming Association), and Mr Duff (of the Swimming Association). They made us very welcome, and w’o all keenly appreciated their efforts on our behalf. Wo had no difficulty in arranging for Hadfield to have .a’ row on the Parramatta with Towns and Dick Arnst and Ernest Barry and McDevitt. They are all greatly impressed with his sculling. Mis’s Walrond and Davidson and Wilson also put in training. An enthusiastic reception was given to the team by New South Wales sportsmen. Writing to his parents (Mr and Mrs T. Wilson, of Wellington), the champion hurdler states that Arnst and* Towns were well done when Hadfield had a trial with them. Miss Walfond, paced by her lather and Wilson, had a swim over 110 yards in the Sydney baths, and did very well, while Davidson and Wilson engaged in two runs on the Sydney sports ground. Davidson is reported to have improved wonderfully “out : of the holes.”
