MARION DEPUTATION

TO MINISTER FOR JUSTICE,

A NEW POST OFFICE.

A Marton deputation, comprising Messrs G. L. Marshall (president of the Marton Farmers’ Union). A. _B. Coleman (Rangitikei County Council), Anderson (president of the Marton Chamber of Commerce), Aloggridge (Marton Retailers’ Association), and Sicily (Marton Borough Council), waited upon the Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. O. Coates) and Minister for Justice (tho Hon. K. P. Leo) yesterday afternoon to urge tho necessity for a new post office for tho borough. -Mr Marshall, who was the chief spokesman, said that Marton was the central town of the Rangitikei district. and was expanding rapidjy. Tho post office was built in 1897, and though tho population pf the place had doubled since then it had only been enlarged to the extent of a few boxes. It was absolutely inadequate for tho business transacted there and caused very great delay. The Minister stated that the department was aware of the position and was concerned about it. The difficulty, ho understood, was as to securing tho courthouse site to permit of tho extension of tho post office. Mr Marshall said that the deputation suggested a new building and n. new site altogether in the centre of tho town. They wanted a money-order office and a savings hank at the same time. A new town hall was to bo built, and the site of the in-esont town hall would shortly be available. The Minister promised to send an officer of tho department to report as to the conditions and upon the site suggested. ___
