When mining wis in full swing ort the West Coast, Hokitika was a town of importance. When mining "slumped" tV>o district went back. A considerable portion of tho land in the vicinity has bcea turned into dairj farms which, with the advent of the sawmilling industry, has had tho effect of giving new life to Hokitika, with tho result that the town Has started to move again.
A powerful American company is about to build a dredce for the purpose of working tho Kiimu Flats foi gold.
