MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. BOARD OF. TRADE AND COAL SUPPLY. The Petone Borough Council met last evening'. There were present the Mayox (Mr J. W. McEwau), Councillors E. Tovey, G. Cook, D. S. Beddingfield, W. Hay, J. Churchouse, W. Cor, C. P. Brocklebank, and H. Anderson. RAILWAY SAFEGUARDS. The Minister for Railways wrote that ho was having inquiries made into tho matter of railway safeguards, and he would again communicate with the council. >■ COAL SUPPLY. The president ofthe Board of Trade wrote respecting the deputation which waited on him recently re coal matters, and advised that the Coal Trade Committee was looking into the question of limiting the coal delivered in Potone to 1 cwt, and that the Board of Trade mi arranging to meet dealers to fix the maximum retail price. It was decided to write to the Minister pointing out that the main thing war the supply, not the fixing of the price fHB GASWORKS. Councillors complained about the state of tho Hutt road, and the following is n. paragraph from the engineer's report on this thoroughfare:—"The tarred portion of the road is setting very slowly, and consequently owing to the traffic the surface an some places is being forced up into lumps. Before giving the second coat, which I.hope to do very soon with hot tar, these will be levelled, and the surface made as good as possible. The I hare leaxnt from this work is that it is absolutely essential that traffic should bo kept off for at least three or four weeks in order to give the tar a chance to set, at the same time rolling with a light roller." » , -.. . ...£.
